It is in this region where approximately 70% of the wine produced in Argentina is made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mendoza is a unique high-altitude region that sees over 300 days of sunlight a year. The soils of the land are rock, sand, and clay and the climate is primarily a dry desert climate situated under the rain shadow of the Andes. Hot days lead to cool nights with little rain for much of the year, providing ideal fluctuations and water stress for grapevines to produce quality fruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the vineyards are planted at an average altitude of 900 meters, with some vines growing at heights far exceeding that. The high-altitude viticulture gives the grapes from Mendoza a signature ripeness that creates lush, bold wines in the bottle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city of Mendoza is a great place to start a journey tasting through this region, and due to its importance as the main city in a high-volume, high-quality wine-producing region, it has been named one of the Great Wine Capitals in the world and is an extremely popular destination for eno-tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mendoza\u2019s Grape Varieties<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mendoza is best known for its Malbec wines, which have a deep history in the region. Originally, grapes were brought by the Spanish via Chile in the late 1500s, however, Malbec did not see a significant rise in popularity until much later. It wasn\u2019t until the late 1800s when the Governor of Mendoza asked French agronomist, Miguel Pouget, to bring some vines from France that Malbec became a star in Argentina. The Malbec vines, which are native to Southwest France, adapted quickly to the land in Mendoza and produced a popular wine with richness, rounded tannins, and bold fruit. The style of Malbec made in Argentina is much different than the wines produced in France, with the Argentine version maintaining a bolder more fruit-forward style of wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malbec is not the only grape in Mendoza, Cabernet Sauvignon has also seen great success coming out of this region, as well as Tempranillo, Merlot, Syrah, Bonarda, and Sangiovese for the reds. Chardonnay, S\u00e9millon, Torront\u00e9s, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pedro Xim\u00e9nez are popular white grapes in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Wine Regions within Mendoza<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Within Mendoza, there are three main wine growing regions, each with subregions within them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Central Region<\/strong> is actually in the northern part of the province with three zones: Alta del Rio Mendoza, East, and North. This area also includes the regions of <strong>Luj\u00e1n de Cuyo<\/strong>, which was the first to be recognized as an appellation, and <strong>Maip\u00fa,<\/strong> just outside the city of Mendoza. The vines in this region are typically planted at 650-1050 meters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Uco Valley Region <\/strong>includes the departments of <strong>Tupungato<\/strong>, <strong>Tunuy\u00e1n<\/strong>, and <strong>San Carlos<\/strong>. The first recorded vineyard was planted in 1551 in Santiago del Estero, a province located in the northern part of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it wasn&#8217;t until the mid-19th century that the wine industry in Mendoza began to flourish. In 1852, Argentina gained independence from Spain, and a wave of European immigrants, particularly Italians, arrived in the country, bringing with them their viticulture knowledge and techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The development of the wine industry in Mendoza was significantly aided by the construction of a railway line in 1885, which facilitated the transport of grapes and wine to Buenos Aires and other parts of the country. Although it\u2019s probably best known as one of the red grapes allowed in Bordeaux blends, it\u2019s equally valued in Cahors in the Southwest. It also thrives in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winetraveler.com\/france\/touraine-loire-valley-travel-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Loire Valley<\/a><\/strong>, where it\u2019s known as C\u00f4t and is often used to produce lighter, more quaffable wines.<\/p>\r\n<p>Malbec is, however, THE grape of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winetraveler.com\/destinations\/argentina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Argentina<\/a><\/strong> due to Nicol\u00e1s Catena. He began a wine revolution in Argentina in the 1980s and studied the climate, the soils, the plantings, the farming. Every aspect of the winemaking process drove his passion to put Argentina on the international wine map. It contains beautiful black fruit flavors and aromatics of spice and some floral notes at times. There are different degrees of complexity in Malbec depending upon the winemaker and the region it is made in.<\/p>\r\n<p>When from Cahors or Argentina, it can be positively inky, whereas it\u2019s lighter and brighter when it\u2019s from the Loire Valley. New World Malbecs outside of Argentina also tend to be muscular and bold. Expect lots of black fruit notes along with distinctive leather, mushroom, tobacco, smoke, pepper, and cacao. There are also hints of forest floor and clay in Malbec wines.<\/p>\r\n<h2><strong><a name=\"pairings\"><\/a>Malbec Food Pairings<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p>We\u2019re big believers in matching wine with cuisine from where it's produced, so try Malbec with grilled Argentine beef and chimichurri sauce \u2013 the pairing will pick up those smoky grilled notes along with the brighter herbal notes.<\/p>\r\n<p>Cassoulet is another hearty pairing for French iterations. That said, since Malbec is so barbecue friendly, pair it with anything on the grill!<\/p>\r\n<h2><strong><a name=\"terroir\"><\/a>Climate and Terroir for Malbec<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p>Argentina is basically a desert, due to the annual amount of rainfall (or lack thereof). For these high-altitude vineyards, careful study has been done for years to ensure the harvest is of the best quality, year in and year out. Water is in high demand and has been grandfathered in for use over the years. One can only use their allotment.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>On the valley floor, there are different methods of harvest, different pruning, and vine training. Vines may be more stressed at higher altitudes, and there are different soils.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Cooler climates, like the Loire Valley, will produce those lighter wines that can be chilled and popped open to sip on an easy Tuesday.<\/p>\r\n<h2><strong><a name=\"aging\"><\/a>How is Malbec Aged? <\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p>Bolder Cahors and Argentine Malbecs can age quite well. Although it's not as tannic as Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec has a similar heft to it that breaks down and evolves beautifully with time. Merlots often have gravel, tea, and forest floor secondary notes, and, depending on the barrel treatment, they can also display cola, cacao, vanilla, or more subtle mushroom and white pepper notes.\r\n<h2><strong><a name=\"pairings\"><\/a>Merlot Food Pairings<\/strong><\/h2>\r\nBecause of Merlot\u2019s lighter tannin structure, there tends not to be an intense sensation of astringency in the mouth. Sangiovese vines tend to adapt to both hot and cold climates, and these various terroir-related adaptations can have a substantial impact on the aromatic and flavor profile of Sangiovese wine.\r\n<h2><strong><a name=\"pairings\"><\/a>Sangiovese Food Pairings<\/strong><\/h2>\r\nIt\u2019s impossible to talk about Italy\u2019s signature grape without mentioning the food! Sangiovese loves the dishes from its homeland, from pizza to pasta with tomato-based sauces to osso buco.\r\n\r\nSangiovese works well with cheeses because of its relatively high acidity levels, and it also can work with spicier dishes like barbecue. California and Washington States have increased plantings, and Australia produces some stunning dry versions of Semillon that are changing popular understanding of how the variety can be vinified. Historically, Semillon was limited to being a key grape of Bordeaux blancs and most significantly, of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winetraveler.com\/france\/sauternes-wine-region-bordeaux\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sauternes<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">The Tasting Notes of Semillon<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">When vinified dry, it exhibits lemon, apple, stone fruit, white florals, and beeswax. Its weight and texture allow it to stand up to a variety of dishes but seared scallops, shrimp, and other richer seafood dishes work beautifully with it. Semillon also works well with highly seasoned dishes; think milder curries, autumnal spices, and high-toned herbs like sage and fennel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">When vinified sweeter, it is richly textured with layers of honey, lanolin, and lush florality. Here, it\u2019s a dessert wine and is traditionally paired with foie gras, but would also work well with sharp and tangy cheeses after a meal. (Note that in France, it\u2019s spelled \u201cS\u00e9millon,\u201d but elsewhere in the world, the accent is not present.) Located south of Graves, Sauternes produces among the most treasured dessert wines in the world, and the star of it all is Semillon. It\u2019s a fairly thin-skinned grape that is prone to being afflicted with botrytis, a fungus that draws out water and effectively concentrates sugars. Neighboring Barsac also produces dessert wine from the Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc-Muscadelle blend. Sauternes and Barsac both experience the perfect climactic conditions for botrytis to develop, with warm days and extra humidity from the proximity to Garonne River. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">In Australia, Hunter Valley and Margaret River are the two key regions that produce wines from Semillon. Here, they tend to be highly acidic, bright and fresh when young and grow richer and more mellow with age. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">California produces Semillon-based dessert wines as well, and producers in Sonoma are beginning to focus on dryer styles. Washington has had good luck with the variety and is also seeing increasing experimentation with it. Chenin Blanc is made as a dry, still white, sparkling, dessert wine, plus demi-sec wines. It truly has something for everyone. With complex notes of beeswax, ginger, lemon verbena, chamomile, and jasmine, there is truly nothing like it. It\u2019s a stand-alone stunner that can be found at a range of price points.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:block {\"ref\":17481} \/-->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wine Growing Regions for Chenin Blanc<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>In 1936 Vouvray, in the Loire Valley, was created as an Appellation d'origine contr\u00f4l\u00e9e (AOC). The region is set along the right bank of the Loire River and has decidedly perfect soil anatomy for Chenin Blanc. Vineyards are usually planted on the plateau above the river bank in soils composed of gravel and clay on top of tuffeau. The climate is also special, in that the cooler regions are perfect for growing grapes for sparkling wine, while the more humid areas are conducive to the growth of noble rot for sweeter wines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>South Africa has long been beating the drum for Chenin Blanc, focusing on the grape for still wines, as well as their dessert wines (called straw wines), that are made by raisining the grapes on straw.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The region in South Africa that spearheaded the Chenin movement (sometimes called Steen there) was the Swartland, under producers such as Chris and Andrea Mullineux, Eben Sadie, David and Nadia Sadie, and Adi Badenhorst.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>California and Washington have had success with the grape as well, mostly using it in blends to add complexity or in dry single varietal bottlings.
