This grape is a cross between the French/American hybrid, Joannes Seyve 23.416 and the Vitis vinifera grape, Gewürztraminer. It is known as being hardier than its German/Alsatian parent while still maintaining the signature spicy/floral characteristics that make Gewürztraminer an international favorite. Created in 1965 by H.C. Barrett at the University of Illinois, Traminette was bred to be a strong variety that could withstand a colder climate but would still resemble Gewürztraminer. It was originally produced to be used as a basic table wine but was later discovered to have a quality standard that was much higher than expected. However, it was not until 1996 that the first commercially available bottle would hit the market. Since then, Traminette has become a quality hybrid that is used in wine production across the Mid-Atlantic and Midwestern United States. It is now claimed by Indiana as the signature grape of the state, as it has shown to grow well in the colder climate caused by harsher winters.

RELATED: Learn About Other Grape Varieties and Visit Wineries with the Free Winetraveler App

Terroir & Winemaking

In the vineyard, Traminette is a medium amber-colored grape with vines that grow best in loamy, sandy soils. It has partial resistance to several fungal diseases, as many hybrids do, and it is well known for its cold hardiness. Producers must be careful to practice proper canopy management to allow for sunlight to reach the grapes as they are known to have a large amount of the aromatic compounds, monoterpenes, that develop strongly when the fruit is exposed to sunlight. Traminette is not an overly robust vine and is considered consistent year-over-year in the vineyard.

In the winery, the grape can be used to produce a wide range of styles of wine from dry single varietal to off-dry, Ice Wine, Botrytis-affected sweet dessert wine, and sparkling wines. It is not common to use malolactic fermentation or oak aging with Traminette wines, but some producers will choose to age the wine on lees in order to increase its weight and mouthfeel. Traminette wines typically have lower acidity.

Tasting Notes

In the glass, Traminette has many of the same signature spice and floral, orange blossom aromas of Gewürztraminer due to the great number of monoterpenes present on the grape. On the palate, the wine expresses flavors of apple, apricot, lychee, citrus, and honey. These wines are typically consumed young within a couple of years from harvest.

Traminette Food Pairings

Traminette is a versatile pairing wine and depending on the level of sweetness in the wine can pair with mild to spicier dishes. A dry single varietal Traminette can accompany richer foods such as roasted meats and portobello mushrooms, but can also go with a light summer salad, dry cheeses like gruyere, or seafood such as oysters. Sweeter styles of the wine will go well with Thai green curry or dumplings with chili oil.

Learn About These Other Wine Grape Varieties

Cabernet Sauvignon

Chardonnay

Chenin Blanc

Cinsault

Grenache

Malbec

Marsanne

Nebbiolo

Petit Verdot

Pinot Grigio

Pinot Meunier

Riesling

Tannat

Teroldego

Written By Jacqueline Coleman

Jacqueline Coleman is a professional wine + travel writer, wine judge, columnist, and consultant based in Miami, FL.

[jetpack_subscription_form title="Get Articles Like These Directly in Your Inbox!" subscribe_text="Subscribe to Winetraveler and receive notifications when new articles are published. Like many hybrids, it was originally produced in France by a man named Joannes Seyve in the early 1960s, but it has since found favor in parts of the U.S., Canada, and Australia. Despite being a popular grape used in winemaking in the 1970s in Bordeaux and the Loire Valley regions, Chambourcin is no longer allowed to be used in AOC or even IGP wines across France because of its status as a hybrid French/American grape, although it is sometimes used in Vin de Table wines in the western Loire Valley region around Nantes. Now, it is quite popular in winemaking throughout states like Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, New York, and in British Columbia, Canada, and New South Wales, Australia. It thrives in well-drained loamy soils and shale. It can grow successfully in cooler regions such as upstate New York and parts of Canada, as well as more moderate regions in Virginia, and warm, humid regions found in New South Wales, Australia. Its tolerance to diseases, especially ones caused by humidity, makes it fairly easy to manage in the vineyard and in warmer or more humid climates.

Chambourcin Tasting Notes

Chambourcin is a deep colored and aromatic red wine grape that is also a “teinturier” grape, meaning that its juice is pink or red instead of clear like most other red grapes. Many producers utilize oak in the winemaking process to soften acidity, which can be quite high in cooler regions. Chambourcin produces a wine that is typically high in acidity with modest tannins and strong flavors that can be complemented with the addition of oak aging.

In the glass, you can expect flavors of black cherry, red fruit, herbaceous notes, black pepper, and even chocolate. Chambourcin can be a single varietal wine or used in blends as it is often produced in Australia where it is blended with Shiraz. It can even be made into a semi-sweet wine or sparkling red wine. It is best consumed in its youth due to its freshness and can be served chilled because of its typically strong flavor.

Food Pairing

Chambourcin wines are best paired with hamburgers, seared steak, or gamey meat like veal or venison. The wines can go well with tomato-based pasta dishes and even dark chocolate, which pairs nicely with semi-sweet versions that still maintain the darker flavors of the wine.

Learn About These Other Wine Grape Varieties

Cabernet Sauvignon

Chardonnay

Chenin Blanc

Cinsault

Grenache

Malbec

Marsanne

Nebbiolo

Petit Verdot

Pinot Grigio

Pinot Meunier

Riesling

Tannat

Teroldego

Written By Jacqueline Coleman

Jacqueline Coleman is a professional wine + travel writer, wine judge, columnist, and consultant based in Miami, FL.

[jetpack_subscription_form title="Get Articles Like These Directly in Your Inbox!" subscribe_text="Subscribe to Winetraveler and receive notifications when new articles are published.
