While there is no definitive proof of its origins, the majority of vitis vinifera grape vine species, which includes Tempranillo, originate from ancient Phoenician cultures near modern-day Lebanon. There is some archaeological evidence that shows Tempranillo began to grow in Spain somewhere between 500 and 900 B.C.

IN THIS GUIDE:

Taste

Pairings

Terroir

Aging

Wine Recommendations

...and more

Depending on where it’s produced, Tempranillo is often blended with other varieties along the lines of Merlot or Garnacha. These varieties add additional complexity since for some, Tempranillo appears more neutral on the palate compared to grapes like Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon.

Also worth noting is how Tempranillo has been received in some surprising locations outside of Spain. Many new world regions, such as the Texas Hill Country in the United States -- about an hour northwest of Austin -- have found this grape to thrive throughout their vineyards. The soil and stark climate changes are similar to that of north-central Spain, and Texas now considers Tempranillo to be its signature grape.

RELATED: Want to Taste Tempranillo on a Vineyard? Visit Rioja for a True Expression

What Does Tempranillo Taste Like?

Tempranillo typically displays brighter fruit notes like black cherry, red currant, plum, cranberry, tomato, and subtle strawberry notes. It can show secondary tones of tobacco, mushroom, black pepper, leather, and herbal notes with limestone, silt, or clay minerality.

Tempranillo packs a bold and structured flavor with a low viscosity (in other words, the liquid itself isn’t ‘thick’). Tempranillo grapes have slightly thinner skins when compared to other black grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon or Teinturier varieties. Skin density plays a big part during fermentation in determining the viscosity of the wine. Tempranillo is perfect for those who enjoy complex wines that aren’t overly heavy.

Tempranillo Food Pairings

Since Tempranillo wines tend to have unique spice notes attached to them, we like pairing them with meat. In particular, shoulder cuts of beef, filet mignon, or braised pork ribs. While it does excessively well when paired alongside meat, lighter-bodied Tempranillo also goes quite nicely with seasoned poultry, in particular chicken, duck, or quail.

For fish, this grape requires a sturdier style like salmon - pair it with salmon and four cheese risotto and you can’t go wrong.

Climate and Terroir for Tempranillo

Tempranillo is most successful in climates that transition from cool to hot during the growing season. It’s a hardy grape, and because of its moderately thick skin it can handle high altitudes and prolonged cold. Regions like Rioja and Ribera del Duero in Spain provide this sort of climate. Temperatures during the day in these regions can average between 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit, while at night the temperate can drop 30-40 degrees. This vine has adapted over centuries to handle the fluctuation and in turn deliver a bold flavored wine. The rocky terrain in these regions also adds some mineral notes to Tempranillo wines.

RELATED: Tempranillo is Now Being Tested in Regions Like Bordeaux Due to Climate Change

How is Tempranillo Aged?

In accordance with many Spanish wine making traditions, Tempranillo is often aged in oak for extended periods of time. Or maybe, the better question is, what ISN'T it? Malvasia has been around for so long that there are debates about whether or not it's a grape or a place. Its name is thought to be derived from the Greek port of Monemvasia, which in medieval times was a seaport primarily dedicated to wine export. In the 14th century when the Venetians ruled this region, they exported so much Malvasia that the name of the port was changed to Malvasia; even wine shops and taverns in Venice were called Malvasia.

Due to its popularity, Malvasia was traded rapidly and was soon grown and vinified not only in Monemvasia but also in Italy, Spain, Madeira, and on the Canary Islands. And much like the use of the name Champagne to universally denote all sparkling wine before 2006, all wines regardless of varietal source that imitated Malvasia's sweet flavor profile were named "Malvasia."

Defining "Malvasia" Further

According to contemporary research, there are at least 18 different significant varietals with "Malvasia" in its primary name that aren't genetically related. It's also made in styles ranging from sparkling to passito and in all the colors of the wine rainbow. Plus, there are about 100 synonyms named differently within the individual countries and regions with different flavor profiles. It isn't surprising that there is so much confusion.

The Tasting Notes of Malvasia

Nowadays, most Malvasia grapes vinified are white, and with so many sub-varieties, it’s hard to generalize a flavor profile. The better white wines are characterized by a bouquet of honeysuckle, jasmine, and tropical fruit with flavors of ripe pear, citrus, peach, honey, star anise, and Asian spices. These styles are typically light and crisp with mild tannins and low acidity. They are regularly blended with other wines to add aromatics and freshness, while sweet styles have aromas reminiscent of apricot, gooseberry, vanilla, butterscotch, and toasted almond with flavors of pineapple, caramel, and ginger and have a luscious, viscous beeswax texture.

The red (or black) varieties are characterized by a bouquet of dried roses, forest floor, Moroccan spice, orange peel with flavors of ripe plums, candied red currant, dark chocolate, baking spices, and black tea. They are light to medium-bodied, with medium tannins and medium acidity, almost always blended to other wines are a predominate grape in both Port and Madeira wines.

Where To Find Malvasia Wines

The most accessible Malvasia to US consumers is Mavasia di Bianca (aka Bianca di Piemonte) mainly grown in California. Producers of this varietal include Ballentine in Napa, Birichino in Monterey, Palmina in Santa Ynez Valley, Kenneth Volk, and Wild Horse in San Bernabe.

In Italy, it’s mostly cultivated in Lazio and is also found in Emilia-Romagna, Liguria, Tuscany, Campania, Umbria, and Sardinia. Malvasia is scarcely vinified on its own and largely mixed amongst many other wines throughout Italy. For example, it’s blended with Trebbiano to make Vin Santo and Sangiovese for the rosé style wine Occhio di Partridge. In Spain, it’s combined with Viura to make Lopez de Heredia’s opulent Viña Tondonia, and of course, it’s one of the main varietals used in the making of Madeira. And just like its many names, the number of wines that include Malvasia throughout the world is overwhelming.

The name “Malvasia” variants depending on the base Thankfully, a few determined winemakers have worked to bring it back into favor and that’s a trend we’re hoping will continue.

The Terroir of Graciano

Because it ripens late, Graciano needs consistent warmth to move it away from strong vegetable notes. Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa are just a bit too cool and it therefore is found more commonly in the hotter Rioja Baja region. It is there that winemakers have found that it can truly thrive and can be crafted into wines of depth and complexity.

Graciano & Rioja Blend Tasting Notes

Graciano is a black-skinned grape that yields deep, dark juice with intense blackberry and mulberry fruit aromas. Graciano also is known for violet, mint, and cedar notes that balance out vanilla-oak influence found in Rioja wines, however subtle they may be. Graciano typically also displays cinnamon, cloves and black pepper spiciness. On its own, it produces lower-alcohol wines (about 12 - 13% ABV) with heady aromas. In a Rioja, it can be more difficult to tease out its influence but balanced acidity and age-worthiness are both certainly traits that can come from this grape variety.

Graciano & Rioja Food Pairings

The complexity of Graciano means that it can pair with some pretty interesting dishes. When seeking an ideal pairing, think about meat-based dishes. Graciano works best with well-spiced lamb, brisket, tri-tip, or grilled chorizo. It can also work with non-red meat dishes as long as the flavor is strong enough; blue cheese, blackened cajun catfish, or spicy black tapenade can all work well.

Wine Growing Regions for Graciano

Although Graciano is included in blends throughout Rioja, most of it is cultivated in the Rioja Baja. According to DOCa laws, a wine that is 100% Graciano can be labeled as a Rioja DOCa but most winemakers make a point to state that it is Graciano and not a standard Tempanillo-centric blend. Outside of Rioja, it also can be found in the Navarra region of Spain.

Since New World winemakers tend to be open to experimentation, some California winemakers have begun experimenting with the varietal as well. Hot regions like Santa Ynez Valley are perfect for this late ripener.

Check out some of these Gracianos and Graciano blends from around the world:

Burgo Viejo, Graciano, Rioja, Spain

Vina Ijalba, Graciano, Rioja, Spain

Bodegas y Vinedos Ilurce, ‘Rio Madre’ Graciano, Rioja, Spain

La Rioja Alta, Gran Reserva 904, Rioja, Spain

Vina Zorzal, ‘Cuatro del Cuatro’ Graciano, Navarra, Spain

Verdad, Graciano, Santa Ynez Valley, Central Coast, California

Learn About These Other Wine Grape Varieties

Cabernet Sauvignon

Chardonnay

Chenin Blanc

Cinsault

Grenache

Malbec

Marsanne

Nebbiolo

Petit Verdot

Pinot Grigio

Pinot Meunier

Riesling

Tannat

Teroldego

Written By Jamie Metzgar

Jamie Elizabeth Metzgar began her career in wine by pouring in a tasting room on the East End of Long Island, NY.
