We woke up early to hike up to the Hallstatt Salt Mine, and when we glanced towards the mine, across the hillside where over 5,000 Hallstatt villagers are buried, the light dramatically shown down on the burial sites pictured beneath the grass in this photo, no filter. This UNESCO World Heritage site has been a significant archaeological hub, with graves and artifacts unveiling the lives of those who called this enchanting place home for thousands of years. Hallstatt has yielded over 5,000 graves, neatly organized along the hillside just above the town. Many of these are thousands of years old, and have been found to contain sumptuous golden grave goods and weaponry. Hallstatt was once a very rich village, thanks to the abundance and high quality of a natural resource that was highly sought after by empires like the ancient Romans: salt.

As you walk along the cobblestone streets, hillsides and forests, whispers of ancient tales surround you, transporting you back in time.

Sitting in pure awe alongside Lake Hallstatt (Hallstätter See), knowing that the waterfront, village and mountainside behind me were an integral part of Celtic culture for thousands of years.
