Situated between Hood River and The Dalles in the charming farm town of Mosier, the winery is biodynamic and occupies a simply stunning setting. Check out ultra-intriguing wines like Mencia, Albarino, and some of the best Oregon sparkling outside of the <strong><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.winetraveler.com\/oregon\/willamette-valley-itinerary\/\" target=\"_blank\">Willamette Valley<\/a><\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/hiyuwinefarm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hiyu Farm<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has garnered a bunch of great press and deservedly so. This bucolic spot seems removed from the modern world. It\u2019s a working farm where some of the state\u2019s most interesting wines are being produced. The blends (including some multi-vintage and some involving some 50 varieties) are inventive and made with minimal intervention and there\u2019s even cider. If you really want to enjoy the splendor of the land, try one of Hiyu\u2019s dining options, like the farmer\u2019s lunch or feast.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phelpscreekvineyards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Phelps Creek Vineyards<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a proper standby along Hood River\u2019s so-called <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/hoodriverfruitloop.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fruit loop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s a trek through the fertile bench above the town, where there are scores of orchards, vineyards, and tasting rooms, most of which enjoy terrific views of Mt. Hood. The place nearly burned down a few years ago during colossal fires (started by fireworks), but it is still at it, making world-class <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #800000;\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.winetraveler.com\/grape\/pinot-noir-wine-characteristics\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pinot Noir<\/a><\/strong><\/span>. They offer a handful of picnic and vineyard experiences, all framed around winemaker Alexandrine Roy\u2019s elegant wines (she\u2019s of the beloved Domaine Roy family out of <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.winetraveler.com\/wine-region\/burgundy\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Burgundy<\/strong><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.winetraveler.com\/united-states\/pacific-northwest-road-trip-itinerary\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pacific Northwest Road Trip Itinerary: San Francisco to Seattle<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Across the river in Washington is <\/span><strong><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jacobwilliamswinery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jacob Williams Winery<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The family-owned operation in Wishram presents a sweeping view of the dramatic transition that takes place as you head east through the Gorge (it\u2019s been reported that you lose an inch of annual precipitation for every mile you go, starting around Hood River). It\u2019s dry and geologically wondrous, with so much to gawk at. The wine is good too, accented by the cheese and charcuterie items if you\u2019re hungry. Look out for a refreshing Ros\u00e9 of <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Cabernet Franc<\/strong><\/span>, balanced <strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Viognier<\/span><\/strong>, and delectable reds like <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Sangiovese<\/span><\/strong> and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Syrah<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While in Wishram, <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cascadecliffs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cascade Cliffs<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a worthwhile stop as well. The winery turns out great Italian varietals like <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Barbera<\/span><\/strong> and <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Nebbiolo<\/span><\/strong> from some of the oldest vines of their type in the region. West about 30 miles along Highway 14 is <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/loopdeloopvintner.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Loop de Loop<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one of several wineries occupying the town of Underwood. The fruit is sourced from an estate vineyard set at 1,200 feet, planted to <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Pinot Noir<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>Riesling<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>Chardonnay<\/strong><\/span>, and Gr\u00fcner Veltliner. The winery even has a highly experimental side label called Wallflower Project that should be on any wine fan\u2019s radar.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farther east and back across the river in Oregon is <\/span><strong><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sunshinemill.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sunshine Mill<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a must-visit for anybody in the region. Self-described as an artisan plaza and winery, the mill is housed in a 130-year-old facility formerly owned by The Sunshine Biscuit Company (where Cheez-Its were made). The former is a bit more formal with offerings like <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Zinfandel<\/strong><\/span>, <strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Riesling<\/span><\/strong>, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Merlot<\/strong><\/span>, and more. The latter is, as the name suggests, a wine-by-the-cup outfit. These portable offerings are ideal for those hiking and camping their way through the Gorge. There are great events here too, depending on the season, including drive-in movies.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><a name=\"top-hotels\"><\/a>Lodging in the Columbia River Gorge<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hood River is a great home base, boasting great stays at places like the waterfront <strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.winetraveler.com\/exw7\" target=\"_blank\">Columbia Cliff Villas Hotel<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The hip <strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.winetraveler.com\/igvc\" target=\"_blank\">Society Hotel<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is right across the river in Bingen, Washington. If a resort is more your speed, <strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.winetraveler.com\/p898\" target=\"_blank\">Skamania Lodge<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is relatively close and touts all the creature comforts. For a more remote stay, consider the <strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.winetraveler.com\/50k1\" target=\"_blank\">Old Parkdale Inn<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.winetraveler.com\/immr\" target=\"_blank\">The Lyle Hotel<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It&#8217;s located in Quincy, within the Ancient Lakes of the Columbia Valley AVA. Dog Mountain is among the most popular, and for good reason, as it zig-zags up the Washington side of the Gorge to a stunning perch.
